DEFINITION
SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT- It’s
which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.
SERICULTURE- It’s a silk farming which is
rearing of silkworms for the production of raw silk.

The science
that deals with the culture of silkworm both under indoor and outdoor conditions
and till the production of silk yarn is designated as sericulture. It is an
emerging discipline of Applied Biology.

Sericulture
is both an art and science of raising silkworm for silk production.
·
India
is the second largest producer of raw silk after China.
·
Sericulture
has better prospects for growth.
·
It
is a farm based, labor intensive and commercially attractive economic activity
falling under the cottage and small-scale sector.
·
It
requires low investment but with potential for relatively higher returns.
·
The
domestic demand for silk, considering all varieties is nearly 25,000 metric tones.
·
The
present strategy of sustainable rural development in India mainly focuses on
poverty alleviation, better livelihood opportunities, provision of basic
amenities through innovative programs of wage and self-employment.
·
Today,
China and India are the two main producers, together manufacturing more than
60% of world production each year.
·
Jharkhand has
become the single largest producer of Tasar Silk in the country and Central
Silk Board has appreciated the state.
·
Tasar
culture is practiced traditionally in Jharkhand mostly by tribes
and weaker section of the society.

IMPORTANCE OF SERICULTURE
·
Sericulture
is combination of agriculture, animal husbandry, cottage industry and pure
textile activity.
·
Sericulture
and silk textile industry is one of the major sub-sectors compromising the
textile sector, related to natural fiber i.e., silk.
·
Sericulture
has the potential of employment generation: export oriented and makes the flow
of wealth from rich classes to poor classes.
·
Silk
is inseparable part of Indian culture and tradition. No ritual is complete without
silk being use as a wear in the form of saree or other.
